THE INAUGURATION OF COSMOPOLITE ART STUDIO
Over nearly thirty years, German-born photographer and artist Armin Raso developed his artistic work process from Tucson through Hamburg, Dublin and Zürich to Melbourne, each place contributing to a growing body of photographic, performative and research-based work. By the time he arrived in Melbourne, these different strands had begun to call for a more deliberate container — a studio in which the work could be gathered, re-contextualised and read as part of an evolving biographical narrative.
The decisive moment came on 27 August 2025, while wandering through an antique shop in the former Canterbury Hall in Melbourne’s inner-east. There, among second-hand records, Raso encountered Benny Carter’s Cosmopolite. The word arrived less as a discovery than as a recognition. It gave a name to something that had already been forming. That moment marked the inauguration of «cosmopolite art studio»: an expanded artistic field shaped by the accumulated work, the places that had informed it, and the possibility of allowing past and present practice to enter into a new relation.
